Abstract

479,499. Automatic adjustment of shoe brakes. ROWLAND, T. C. E., and PARKER, H. Aug. 4, 1936, No. 21400. [Class 103 (i)] Automatic adjusting-gear for an internal shoe brake comprises abutments 17 adapted to be advanced by screw and nut mechanism operated by toothed gearing such as worm and a ratchet in a casing 25 which is mounted on a brake shoe 12 and the driving member 31 of which is coupled to a moving part of the brake other than the drum, in the example shown, the cam 34. The worm of the worm gear operating the screw and nut mechanism carries a ratchet wheel at its end enclosed in the casing 25 which carries a pawl engaging the ratchet wheel. The casing is rotatablv mounted on the worm shaft and is connected by a link 31 to an arm 33 fixed to the brake cam which engages the abutments 17. Two further arrangements of the arm 33 and link 31 are shown. Specifications 446,339 and 456,238 are referred to.
