376,896. Variable speed gearing. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd., Mill bank, London, and GREENWOOD, J. E., 1, Stubbs Road, Wolverhampton. May 22, 1931, No. 15147. [Class 80 (ii).] Relates to ratchet control gear for motor cycle and other variable-speed gearing of the type in which a control lever returns to central position after each operation, successive movements in one direction stepping the gear up and in the other direction stepping it down. The control-lever 15 is formed with two pawls 17 at one end and turns on a pivot 14 on an arm 12 loose on the spindle of a ratchet wheel 10, which operates two shifting-forks 5 by a toothed segment 7, pinion 6, and cam drum 4. A light spring 20 carried in the lever 15 presses a plunger 19 into engagement with cam faces 13 on the arm 12 to return the lever and arm to alignment, and a strong spring 23 in the casing forces a plunger 22 against the faces 13 to return the arm and lever to central position. On movement in either direction, the lever 15 rocks on the pivot 14 to engage one pawl 17 with one of its co-operating ratchet-teeth 11, when the arm 12 and lever 15 move together until the arm strikes a stop 24. In a modification, the plunger 19 is dispensed with and the pawls 17 are carried in a lever secured to the lever 15, which is operated by a linkage spring-returned to central position. An indicator may be secured to the ratchet wheel 10.
