[Class 80 (ii).] A gear-changing device especially for motor cycles comprising a gear-changing quadrant e formed on its side with oppositely-facing ratchet teeth e<1>, e2 is located within a casing a, Fig. 1, and has a control shaft b extending outside and carrying a lever d engageable by the foot. The quadrant e is loose on shaft b which carries rigidly oppositelyextending arms b<3>, b<4>. Arm b<3> carries a pivot pin g for two spring pawls h, h<1> Fig. 2, extending downwards over the two sets of teeth el, e2. A mask j, which allows one pawl only to act at a time, has a lower extension j<3> forming a casing for springs l, l<1>, which engage the arm b<4> tangentially and bring the shaft b always back to mid position. Successive oscillations of lever d to one side or the other impart stepped successive displacements to quadrant e, each corresponding to a single gear change. During such oscillations, the shaft b is stopped by steps #<1>, Fig. 4, on a stepped quadrant f fast on shaft b striking a spring plunger m. More than one gear change can be made at a time, as for instance from first to fourth, by adding sufficient force to the pedal d to cause plunger m to ride up over steps #<1>, #<2> on quadrant f and come to rest at step #<3>.
