Abstract

562,420. Variable - speed gearing. ARIEL MOTORS, Ltd., and PAGE, V. March 2, 1943, No. 3432. [Class 80 (ii)] In variable speed gear actuating mechanism, particularly for motor cycles, in which a foot lever is used to effect speed changes, an additional foot lever is incorporated, which, when actuated, brings the gear to the neutral condition. As shown, arms b for shifting gears c have projections e engaging cam grooves d on a spindle a provided with a gear f. The latter s in mesh with teeth g on a pivoted quadrant h operable by the normal gear-changing foot lever i through a ratchet member j and pivoted pawl k. The ratchet j and lever i are fixed to a hollow sleeve m. A spindle o passing through the sleeve m has fixed thereto a foot lever p and a lever q. The latter meshes by teeth t with a lever r pivoted on a fixed axis and loaded by a spring s. Extending from the quadrant h is an abutment y lying between the two levers q, r. To bring the gear to neutral the foot lever p is depressed against a stop z so that the two levers q, r, turn in opposite directions whereupon one or the other of them will engage the abutment y and thus move the quadrant h to the neutral position.
