569,742. Controlling variable-speed gearing. BIRMINGHAM SMALL ARMS CO., Ltd., and FLETCHER, J. Oct. 5, 1943, No. 16299. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In change-speed mechanism having a cam 5 for moving striking forks 1, 3, a plurality of teeth 27 are formed on or fitted to the cam 5 for engagement with a pawl 25 pivoted to a rocking lever 15. Movement of the latter gives the cam a step-by-step movement in one direction or the other. As shown, for a fourspeed gear, the cam has three projections 27, and the pawl 25 has a depression 37 engaged by a spring-pressed ball 35 in the lever 15 so that normally the pawl 25 is held central with respect to the lever 15. The latter is actuated in either direction bv an arm 17 on a shaft 19 having a foot lever 21. A projection 23 on the arm 17 is engaged on both sides by springs so that the arm 15 is returned in a central position when the lever 21 is released. The cam 5 is latched in its various positions by the engagement of a spring-pressed detent 43 with notches 41 in the cam.
