Abstract

693,491. Change-speed control. FRANCIS & BARNETT, Ltd., and KING, W. A. March 22, 1951 [March 23, 1950], No. 7239/50. Class 80 (ii). In a motor cycle gear-box of the kind in which a pedal operates a gear shifting element through a ratchet mechanism and spring means returns the pedal to an inoperative position after each gear change, a rotary member 12 disposed adjacent to, and rotatable about the axis of, a gear striking fork 11 pivoted about an axis at right angles to the gear shafts has rotatably mounted thereon a carrier member 15 having pawls 17 (only one of which is visible in the Figure) engageable with teeth 19 on the member 11 by initial movement of the operating pedal further movement then effecting a gear change. The carrier 15 has lugs 16 which coact with the ball end 6 of a lever 5 carried on a shaft 2 which is rotatable, in a bearing 8 supported in the gear casing, by a pedal 1. The lever 5, and hence the pedal 1 also, is urged by a spring 7 to a position in which a lug 9 thereon lies within a stop 10 on the gear casing. A similar spring 22 engages a stop 27 and a lug 25 on an arm 14 integral with the member 12 to resiliently maintain that member in an inoperative position. Lugs 28 on the arm 14 limit the movement of the member 12. A spring loaded plunger 30 engages a notched segment 29 on the member 11 which is thereby held in positions corresponding to the gears selected. The axes of rotation of the carrier member 15 and the rotary member 12 are preferably perpendicular.
