Abstract

628,423. Variable-speed gearing ratchet gearing. BURNSIDE, J. Aug. 30, 1947, No. 24060. [Class 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In pawl-and-ratchet gearing a lever 5 oscillatable about the axis 3 of the driven ratchet wheel 1 carries a spring pressed pawl 19, the end 6 of the lever 5 engaging a projection 23 on a member 22 pivoted on a fixed support at 21 which carries a second spring pressed pawl 29, the two pawls engaging the ratchet wheel at diametrically opposite points. The pivot pin 27 of the pawl 29 is mounted in slots 26 in member 22 and is carried by arms freely mounted on shaft 3. As the lever 5 oscillates, each pawl rotates the wheel 1 for one of the directions of movement of the lever. The speed of rotation may be varied by driving lever 5 from alternative crank pins 11, 16, 17. Frictional driving pads may replace the pawls.
