[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXIV and XXXIII] The reaction annulus 53 of an epicyclic gear (see Group XXIV) driving contra-rotating propellers is connected to the fixed casing of the gear through a torque measuring device comprising a bell-crank lever 59 mounted freely on a link 63 pivoted on the casing, one arm of said lever being pivoted to a lug 60 on the annulus 53, and the other arm bearing on a piston member 61 working in a cylinder 62 on the casing. Thus as the torque reaction varies, the lever 59 rocks to displace the piston 61 and some indication of the torque transmitted may be obtained. The device can be employed to indicate failure of the engine, or, if used in conjunction with a torque meter in the engine driving shaft, to measure the torques absorbed by each of the airscrews.
