Abstract
764,977. Dynamometers. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Sept. 30, 1955 [Oct. 6, 1954], No. 28757/54. Class 106 (2). A dynamometer for measuring the torque transmitted by a shaft 11, 12 comprises two input wheels 14, 15 fast on or driven by the spaced portions 11, 12 of the shaft and meshing respectively with two sun-wheels 18, 19 mounted coaxially for independent movement in a fixed carrier 16, in turn meshing respectively with the two parts 21 22 of a double planet-wheel having a carrier 20 angularly movable about the axis of the sun-wheels, the gear ratio from both input wheels 14, 15 to the corresponding part 21, 22 of the planet-wheel being unity so that motion is transmitted to the carrier 20, and to the attached pointer 24 when, and only when, relative motion of the spaced portions of the shaft takes place. As shown, the transmitting shaft comprises two axially spaced portions 11, 12 not twisting appreciably under normal loading which are joined by an intermediate torsion portion 13 capable of appreciable twist. Alternatively, the mechanism can be applied to an existing shaft by locating it to one side thereof and coupling it thereto at spaced points by gears mounted thereon and meshing with the input wheels 14, 15.
