Abstract
654,059. Dial gauges. SMITH & SONS (ENGLAND), Ltd., S. June 13, 1947, No. 15694. [Class 106 (ii)] Rectilinear movement of a member 10 is converted to proportional angular movement of a member 1, or vice versa, by a third member s engaging members 1, 10 at p, q, respectively, and also a fixed part at O. The axis of rotation 2 of member 1 is approximately twice as far from O as it is from p, one of the three engagements is pivotal and the others are rocking and sliding engagements over faces on the member s lying in planes containing the axis of the pivotal engagement, and the line joining points O and p makes a " small angle " (defined in the Specification) with the line joining points O and 2 throughout the operating range of movement of the member. As shown, the member 10 is the plunger of a dial gauge and the member 1 is a gear sector connected by gearing 14 to an indicating pointer (not shown). The member s has co-planar faces 15, 16 engaging knifeedges, O, q and is pivoted to the member 1. Other forms of member s are described, one of which is pivoted at the fixed point O and has faces like 15, 16 in orthogonal planes containing O.
