[Class 37] [Also in Group XXXVIII] A device for transmitting a reading to a distance comprises a transmitter consisting of a variable resistance having its ends connected together and having adjustable tapping points connected to a ratiometer receiver. Fig. 1 shows a resistance 10 having a tapping 11 which is moved in accordance with a member 12 whose position is to be transmitted, tappings 14, 15 being connected to the windings 18, 19 of a ratiometer. if only a small movement of member 12' is to be indicated the two tappings are placed far apart so that the small deflection is magnified and a full scale deflection is obtained on scale 27. For a large deflection of member 12 the tappings are placed near together so that the amount of magnification is reduced and a full-scale deflection again obtained. As shown, Fig. 2, the tapping 11a engages one surface of resistance 10a and tappings 14a, 15a engage the opposite surface. Each contact comprises a housing 40 containing opposed plungers 41, 42 spring pressed to contact the resistance and a stationary-contact ring 43 respectively, the contact rings being provided with external connections. The tappings 14a, 15a can be adjusted by knobs 51, 54 through gearing and then clamped into their adjusted positions by means of screw 55. Specification 556,258,is referred to.
