871,357. Measuring torque electrically. WILMOT-BREEDEN Ltd., and WAYNE KERR LABORATORIES Ltd. March 9, 1960 [Feb. 11, 1959], No. 4833/59. Class 40 (1). Apparatus for determining the torque transmitted by a shaft comprises a capacitive transducer for measuring the twist along the shaft. As shown (Fig. 1) a sleeve 12 attached to the shaft 10 at one end, carries a circular plate 17 at the other end, facing a plate 19 fixed directly to the shaft, the shaft being undercut under the sleeve 12 to allow an appreciable amount of twist. The opposing faces of plates 17, 19 contain ceramic rings 20, 21 on to which are photo-etched a number of equally-spaced copper segments forming a multiplate capacitor whose capacitance varies when transmitted torque twists the shaft. The plates 17, 19 are spring biased together, with ball-bearings 28 between them. Plate 17 is mounted on bearings 18 on the shaft 10. The capacitance between the segments on plates 17, 19 is measured in a bridge circuit.
