790,631. Electric indicating systems. KELVIN & HUGHES, Ltd. Jan. 2, 1956 [Dec. 14, 1954], No. 36149/54. Class 40 (1). A thermocouple instrument comprises a thermocouple 10 connected with an indicator circuit 12, a protective device 11 which applies a potential difference across the thermocouple so as to urge the indicator to full-scale reading on breakage of the thermocouple and a compensating device 14 which injects into the indicator circuit a voltage equal and opposite to the voltage developed across the thermocouple by the protective device when the thermocouple is unbroken. The protective device 11 comprises a transformer 15 the secondary of which is connected to a rectifier 16 which through a resistor 17 applies the potential difference to the thermocouple. The compensating device comprises a transformer 25 which through a rectifier 20 and resistor 21 is connected across a variable resistor 22 in the circuit between the thermocouple and the indicator. The rectifier 20 is arranged so that the voltage developed across the part of the resistor 22 in circuit is in opposition to the voltage developed across the indicator 24 by the protective device 11 and hence by adjustment of the resistor 22 the pointer of the indicator 24 can be adjusted to its neutral position. Since the transformers 15 and 25 are connected to the same mains supply balance is maintained irrespective of voltage fluctuations. A single transformer can be used instead of two separate transformers.
