Abstract

807,232. Electrical indicating systems. ANDERSON, J. C. Oct. 17, 1956 [July 22, 1955], No. 21208/55. Class 40 (1). In a temperature measuring device, a thermistor 1 (Fig. 1), constitutes the whole, or part, of the bias resistance of a transistor 6, changes in the resistance value of thermistor 1 producing corresponding changes in the collector current of the transistor, the value of which current is measured by a galvonometer-type meter 7, calibrated to give direct temperature readings. The thermistor 1 is normally in circuit whereas the resistor 12 is not. To adjust the zero reading of the meter, the thermistor 1 is replaced by resistor 12, adjusted to have a resistance value equal to that of the thermistor 1 at a prearranged temperature, and the value of resistance 10 is adjusted to give the desired zero reading. The sensitivity is dependent upon the value of resistance 2. In a modified arrangement (Fig. 2) two transistors 13, 14 are used, only the former being controlled by thermistor 1, and the meter is connected between the two collectors. Variations in the characteristics of the transistor 13 with variations in operating temperature are thus compensated by similar variations in those of transistor 14. The meter is zeroed by switching resistor 21 into circuit in place of the parallel combination of thermistor 1 and resistor 18 and then adjusting variable resistance 25. The transistors are preferably housed in a thermal sink consisting of a metal casing of large thermal capacity.
