Abstract

780,118. Electric measuring instruments. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO., Inc. Sept. 30, 1955 [Oct. 18, 1954], No. 27878/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 37. The zero of a galvanometer is suppressed by connecting in series with its movement a non- linear resistor having a substantially constant dynamic resistance of low value over a major part of the range and a very high resistance over the initial part of the range. As described, a silicon avalanche type diode is used, either the forward or reverse characteristics being suitable. A further diode may be connected in series with the meter in reverse sense to protect the meter against reverse voltages. For A.C. measurements an A.C. meter is used and this is connected in series with a non-linear resistor either having a symmetrical characteristic for forward and reverse voltages or formed of two similar diodes connected back-to-back. The series resistor 4 may be such as to provide temperature compensation. Specification 2630/1886, [Class 106], is referred to.
