Abstract

862,462. Torque transducers. SAUNDERSROE Ltd. Dec. 18, 1959 [Dec. 22, 1958], No. 41375/58. Class 40 (1). A compact torque transducer comprises a a shaft 10 which has a portion of reduced diameter accommodating strain gauges and contact slip rings or other pick-off means which are fitted on the same length of shaft. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment in which four strain gauges 15 are cemented on to the reduced shaft 12. An insulating sleeve 16 is fitted over the gauges as shown and the slip rings 17 are mounted on this, separately insulated by sleeves 18 and clamped into position by a nut 20. This constitutes the rotor of the device. Contact is made via several brushes 27 fitted in the stator brush housing 25 to a D.C. or A.C. circuit which interprets the torque, in for example a bridge circuit. In an alternative embodiment supplied by A.C., Fig. 2 (not shown), the input and output are transmitted by means of two transformers, each of which has a rotor and a stator winding and since both rotor windings rotate together the coupling is not affected. The device can be used to measure power by incorporating it with a speed transducer.
