865,963. Transducers. VYZKUMNY A ZKUSEBNI LETECKY USTAV. Jan. 13, 1960 [Jan. 15, 1959], No. 1262/60. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXIX] In a magnetostrictive torsional transducer for use in dynamometers, pressure pick-ups and similar devices, and which is relatively free from thermal and external magnetic field effects, a ferromagnetic magnetostrictive cylinder 1 has a coaxial pick-up coil 2 and a toroidal A.C.- excited winding 3 embedded in recesses 4 of butts at the ends of the magnetostrictive cylinder 1, the butts at one end of the magnetostrictive cylinder 1 being in direct contact with a surrounding ferromagnetic cylinder 6 and at the other end making contact by way of a non- magnetic ring 5. A large torque may be applied to flanges 7 which are forced on to butts on the ferromagnetic cylinder 6, thus transmitting a much smaller torque to the magnetostrictive cylinder 1, although still large enough to cause a deformation of the cylindrical alternating magnetic field produced by the exciting winding 3. This deformation results in a longitudinal component of the field which is proportional to the twisting and it is detected by the pick-up coil 2 as an E.M.F. which is transferred to a measuring- circuit through output leads 9.
