880,889. Electrical measurement of shaft thrust. METZMEIER, E. July 30, 1959, No. 26237/59. Class 40 (1). In a device for measuring the thrust of the shaft 2 of a ship or aircraft propeller, annular springs 6 and 6<SP>1</SP>, carrying strain-sensitive devices such as resistance wires are respectively expanded and compressed under the action of tapered ring 5, due to the thrust of the shaft transmitted via collar 3 and thrust blocks 4. Temperature compensation may be provided by further resistance windings on a ring of similar material to that of the springs 6 and 6<SP>1</SP> mounted, so as not to be subjected to thrust forces, in a space in between the annular springs (Figs. 6 and 7, not shown). Errors due to friction between the springs and the tapered ring may be reduced by inducing high-frequency vibrations of either the ring or springs by magnetostrictive transducers (Figs. 8 and 9, not shown).
