986, 973. Electrical load cells. BERLINER INDUSTRIEWAAGENFABRIK G.m.b.H. Nov.17, 1961 [Jan. 11, 1961], No. 41297/61. Heading G1N. A circular strain member 2 of a load cell comprises two triangular sections 4, 5, the load to which is axially transmitted so as to act through points of application 6 and 7 located approximately at the same level as the centres of gravity 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP> of the triangular sections. Strain gauges 8 and 9, 10, 11 are respectively symmetrically disposed to a reference plane joining the section load application points and centres of gravity of each triangular section and the pairs of gauges are equally disposed about the central medium plane of the strain member. With the application of an axial load gauges 9 and 11 are in tension whilst gauges 8, 10 are compressed. Temperature compensation is achieved by unstrained gauges 12, 13. A tubular member 24 attached at one end to a base plate 15 protects the strain member by acting as an overload stop when a small gap between it and a top plate 14 is closed by the application of an excessive force.
