630,879. Measuring compressive forces. COX & STEVENS AIRCRAFT CORPORATION. Nov. 15, 1946, No. 33940. Convention date, Sept. 12, 1945. [Class 40 (i)] Strain gauges.-Apparatus for measuring compression forces, e.g. weights comprises a column of deformable material 3 arranged between a base member 1 and a top member 12 having resistance strain gauges 14 or other electrical or magnetic gauges mounted on the walls of the column so as to be actuated by relative movement between the top and base members. The resistance gauges may be mounted outside and inside the column to compensate for differing deformation of the outside and inside. A surrounding cylindrical shell 5 carries a flexible member 6 at its top which fits closely around the top member and urges it into engagement with the central column. A dummy column which is not stressed may be mounted in the centre of the deformable column and the resistance values of its strain gauges compared with those of the deformed gauge in a bridge circuit. These dummy gauges eliminate the effect of temperature variations.
