Abstract
778,440. Electric measuring systems. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.-GES. July 28, 1955 [July 28, 1954], No. 21813/55. Class 40(1). Apparatus for measuring variations in tensile or compressive stress in, e.g. a cable comprises an elastic linkage having a coil attached to one end and a core attached to the other end of the cable, whereby relative movements of the two ends produced by variations in stress produce a change in inductance which may be measured. The coil and core may alternatively be two electrodes of a condenser whose capacity is measured. As shown (Fig. 2), two similar coils 12a, 12b are attached to one side of the linkage, and a core comprising two soft iron parts 14a, 14b separated by a brass part 14 is attached to the other side of the linkage, the coils 12a, 12b being connected in a H.F. bridge circuit. The core is initially adjusted by screw 13 to balance the inductances of coils 12a, 12b and subsequent relative movement is indicated by the bridge unbalance current. The measuring unit is mounted in a box 1 (Fig. 1), with an attached threaded stem 15 and coupling 16 for connection to a cable. The core and screw 13 are carried by a stem 7, also provided with a cable coupling 19, which has two flexible plates 5, 6 clamped inside the box 1 by spacers 4 to allow movement between the two ends of the cable.
