966,713. Measuring electrically. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. July 14, 1961 [July 18, 1960], No. 25604/61. Heading G1N. A device for measuring forces causing distortion in a rotary shaft 1, comprises a pair of collars 2, 3 rigidly attached to the shaft, one or more rods 4, 5, parallel to the shaft and secured at one end in one collar 3, and connected at the other end to a strain sensitive element 6 lying at right angles to the axis of the shaft and carried by the other collar 2, and strain gauges attached to element 6 for measuring the stresses therein. Element 6 preferably consists of a hollow tube on which four strain gauges 8 are mounted in diametric pairs. The gauges form the arms of a Wheatstone bridge circuit and it is shown that forces other than the axial force P can be eliminated from the electrical output by suitable connection of the strain gauges. As shown, a second strain sensitive element 7 is connected to rod 5 and carries strain gauges connected in a second bridge circuit connected in series with the first. The bridge outputs are taken off through slip rings. A further bridge circuit is provided to measure torque.
