Abstract
918,338. Measuring torque electrically. WESTLAND AIRCRAFT Ltd. March 20, 1961 [March 26, 1960], No. 10782/60. Class 40 (1). In a torque transducer of the type having strain gauges mounted to measure the twist of a shaft transmitting the torque, the slip ring assembly is detachably mounted over the portion of the shaft to which the strain gauges are attached. Two embodiments are described, in one of which the transducer has two torque ranges. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment in which a shaft. 10 has a portion of reduced diameter 12 to which the resistance strain gauges are attached. The connections to the strain gauges are taken via a channel 16 in the shaft to a plug 20 in a flange 15 attached to the shaft. The slip ring assembly comprises a sleeve 22 having a flange 23 carrying a socket 24 to mate with plug 20, the flange being secured to flange 15, and hence shaft 10, by screws 44. The sleeve 22 carries a plurality of ring electrodes 27 which dip into pools of mercury 41 carried in chambers formed in the block 11 which is rotatably mounted on sleeve 22 by bearings 36. Plug 42 is connected to metallic parts 31 of the mercury chambers to establish electrical contact, via the mercury, with the electrodes 27 which are in turn connected via plug 20 and socket 24 with the strain gauges 13. Two range torque transducer, Fig. 2, has two sets of strain gauges, one set mounted on a shaft 61 splined into the driven and driver shafts 48 and 52 and the other set mounted on a sleeve extension of shaft 48 which is connected to shaft 52 by pins 51 attached to flange 46 on the sleeve, working in slots 54, Fig. 3, of a flange 53 of shaft 52. Small torques are therefore transmitted by shaft 61 until pins 51 engage the ends of slots 54 when the torque is transmitted by sleeve 47. Connections to the strain gauges mounted on portions 49 and 62 of the sleeve and shaft respectively are made via a slip ring assembly as described with reference to Fig. 1 mounted over the sleeve 47.
