Abstract
939,175. Measuring torque electrically. AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS CO. Ltd. May 2, 1962 [May 2, 1961], No. 15860/61. Class 40 (1). A torque measuring device comprises a coupling between two parts of a drive-shaft and incorporates spoked portions 4 through which the drive is transmitted and the resultant strain in which is measured by resistance strain gauges 12. The coupling comprises a hub portion 1 integrally formed with a flange 2 and bolted to a flange 5, both flanges being bolted to the shaft portions. The spokes 4, formed by machining out gaps 3, are provided with overload stops 14 which each comprise a reamered hole 31 central in the remaining hub portion, and from the top and bottom of which saw cuts 32 extend tangentially in opposite directions. Each hole 31 contains a pin 33 located by stop-pin plates 34. The pins 33 are a smaller diameter than the holes 31 and thus form a peripheral gap which closes on the occurrence of an overload. Connections to the strain gauges 12 located on each side of the spokes 4, pass through a passage 11 and terminate at four slip-rings 7, each having two silver graphite spring-loaded brushes 8 spaced angularly one from another and located in a cylindrical housing 9 axially positioned on the hub 1 by plain bearings 10 which allow relative rotation, rotation of the housing 9 being prevented by anchoring means such as springs. The strain gauges 12 are connected into a four active arm bridge, the output from which is indicated and/or recorded. A second embodiment (Figs. 3, 4, not shown) discloses a coupling as above but the axial length of which is readily adjustable by either having a series of hub portions 1 of differing lengths, or by making both flanged portions 2, 5 detachable and located on the hub by necked portions of differing lengths. So that the driveshaft may be used in the absence of the torque measuring coupling, a dummy coupling having no spokes but integrally formed flanges and hub portions, may be substituted.
