607,857. Dynamometers. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Feb. 17, 1944, No. 2946. Convention date, Feb. 22, 1943. [Class 106 (ii)] A torque-measuring device comprises two torque reaction members mounted on quill shafts, each quill shaft having a second rotatable shaft running therethrough, means for coupling the outer ends of the quill shafts and of the inner shafts to the device whose torque is to be measured, and means for coupling the inner end of either quill shaft to at least one, preferably to any one, of the other shafts. Each dynamometer is arranged to function for either direction of rotation. The arrangement is such that a driving device may be tested at one end of the set whilst a second driving device is being prepared and/or an earlier driving device is being removed at the other end, and is such that one or both dynamometers may be used to measure the torque of a single driving device. A pair of dynamometers is mounted coaxially on the base plate 75, and is provided with quill shafts 10, 11 adapted to produce a torque reaction in relatively rotatable members 12, 13 which for either direction of rotation through a system of levers and links 93, 92 and 78, 77 produces an upward thrust at point 76 and a downward thrust at point 91 of lever 72, pivoted at 73, the combined thrust being measured at 110, 111. The quill shafts 10, 11 and rotatable torque reaction members 12, 13 are rotatably mounted in pedestals 26, 27 and 28, 29. The quill shaft 10 is splined at its ends 42, 43 and shaft 11 at 44, 45. Rotatably mounted within the quill shafts are second shafts 30, 31, the inner ends of which carry collars 38, 39 splined at 40, 41 so that an internally splined annular member 56 can connect either quill shaft to either second shaft or connect the two quill shafts together, or make other connections according to its position. The annular member 56 is located in the desired position by a spring-pressed plunger 60 engaging in one of a series of notches. Rotatably mounted on the outer ends of the second shafts 30, 31 are coupling elements 46, 47 splined at 50, 51 and carrying slidable internally splined annular members 48, 49 whereby the coupling elements can be connected to the quill shafts. The annular members 48, 49 are located by spring-pressed plungers 69. The outer ends of the shafts 30, 31 are splined at 36, 37 for connection to driving means.
