Abstract

703,883. Dynamometers. HEENAN & FROUDE, Ltd. Nov. 10, 1952 [Nov. 10, 1951], No. 26373/51. Class 106 (2). [Also in Group XXVII] A dynamometer for testing the power output of internal combustion engines comprises a drum-like structure 1 in which are mounted the engine under test 33 and a dynamometer 5 measuring the power developed. The structure is rotatable about a horizontal axis passing through its centre of gravity, and a motor 15, Fig. 3, for starting and running in the engine under test is mounted on an independent stationary support. The output from the engine 33 is transmitted by a Cardan shaft 11 to a gear-box 14 and then via a Cardan shaft 12 to a dynamometer 5. The gear box 14 transmits the engine output through a shaft 13 coupled between the two Cardan shafts 11, 12 as shown in Fig. 5. Mounted on the shaft 13 is one of a pair of bevel wheels 22 freely rotatable on a sleeve terminating in one member of a clutch 24. The other member 25 of the clutch is keyed to, and slidable on, the shaft 13 by means of keys 26. In operation the engine 33 is started by the motor 15 by means of the drive through a variable speed drive 16, shaft 36 and Cardan shaft 18 and through the bevel gears 21 22 and clutch 24, 25, which is then disengaged automatically by means not shown. The power output from the engine is then transmitted to the dynamometer as described above. The position of the engine and dynamometer with respect to the horizontal axis may be varied by means of a ratchet handle 32, Fig. 3, co-operating with a ratchet gear 31. The drumlike structure may then be clamped in any desired position by clamps 10 which clamp the rollers 7 on which the structure is supported. The starting motor 15 and variable speed gear 16 is supported on a separate fixed support 35.
