Abstract

223,046. Heenan & Froude, Ltd., and Walker, G. H. Oct. 10, 1923. Dynamometers, rotary-absorption.-Relates to devices in which the engine under test is connected. to a suitable brake to absorb but not to measure the power developed while mounted on a torque reaction cradle fitted with torque measuring devices, and consists in the combination with the torque reaction cradle of a hydraulic rotary absorption brake which will absorb but not measure the power developed. The engine B to be tested is mounted on the cradle A with its shaft b coaxial with the axis of the cradle, which is supported on rollers a carried in the frame A<1>. A link C connects the cradle to a two-armed lever C' pivoted to the frame A<1> at a<1>. The short arm carries a counterweight W<1> while adjustable weights W may be carried on a bolt c depending from the long arm of the lever. Instead the weights W, spring balances may be used, and dash-pots may be fitted to the lever C<1>. The shaft b of the engine is coupled to the shaft d of a hydraulic brake D of any suitable kind fitted with devices for regulating the power absorbed, such for instance as the " Froude " brake, by means of a short shaft e with flexible couplings E at each end. Suitable driving means may be connected to the shafts b or d for starting up the engine or for running-in the engine when it is new. In one form, the brake D is preferably of the reversible kind and is mounted midway between two cradles A, the power shaft b of each engine being coupled up by flexible couplings E to either end of the brake-shaft d. With this arrangement, one engine while undergoing test may be used to drive the other for running-in purposes. In another arrangement the cradles may be mounted alongside one another and opposite the holes D, D, each to each, a chain connecting the shaft of one brake with the shaft of the other- A part of the power developed may be utilized to drive a centrifugal fan, the air from which may be used to cool. the engine.
