Dynamometers; systems for testing motor vehicles.-A self-contained unit for testing the brakes of automobiles comprises rollers adapted to support and drive a vehicle wheel under brake resistance, power means for driving the rollers and means for indicating the torque. The fluted rollers 16, 17 are mounted in ball bearings upon a frame or base plate and are connected by a chain and sprocket gear. The roller 16 is driven by an electric motor 27 through worm gear 34, 35 and a reduction gear contained in a casing 42. The worm wheel shaft is arranged in line with the shaft 19 of the roller 16 and the casing 42 can turn about the common axis of the aligned shafts. The casing has an arm 57 which is connected by a turnbuckle link to an arm 59 connected to an indicator 66 which is constructed to turn in a horizontal plane so as to face any convenient direction. A spring inside the indicator opposes the turning of the casing 42. The worm wheel shaft 36 drives through wheels 52, 53 and 56, 41 giving a very slow rotation of the wheel so that the brake adjustment may be checked at different stages in the same revolution. The gears 53, 56 and their shaft tend to rotate about the common axis of the aligned shafts moving the casing downwards which movement is transferred by the arm 57 to the indicator. Runways 80 are provided where the unit rests on a floor or the unit may be let into the floor, and an idle roller 25 is provided to retain the wheels on the rollers. Anchoring means are provided to prevent the vehicle climbing out of the device when the brakes are on. Two or four units are used in testing a vehicle.
