Abstract

Dynamometers, rotary-transmission.-Relates to apparatus of the kind in which a driving shaft is connected to a driven shaft through intermeshing gear wheels mounted on several shafts and indicating mechanism is operated by a member rotating by the piston of the driven mechanism, and consists in a construction whereby an indicating member is rotated by friction of the driven mechanism without causing any bodily displacement of the driving or driven shafts. The member or casing 18 is provided with ball bearings for the shafts 12, 14 and for a countershaft 20 to which are secured two planet wheels 22, 24 gearing with wheels 26, 28 on the shafts 12, 14 respectively. The wheels 24, 26 are of equal size while the wheels 22, 28 are of equal size and bigger than the first pair. A weight 40 may be moved along a radial screw 42 in a plane passing through the axis of the shafts 12, 14 and through the centre of gravity to raise and lower the latter. The centre of gravity can be varied laterally to bring the pointer 34 to zero on the fixed scale 36 by moving a weight 44 on a tangential screw 46. In use, the weight 44 is adjusted to bring the pointer to zero when the motor 10 is running at constant speed thus compensating for internal friction and other inaccuracies. A speedometer or other mechanism to be tested is then connected to the squared end 16 of the shaft 14 and the angular movement of the casing which is a function of the torque being measured is indicated by the pointer. The sensitiveness may be varied by moving the weight 40 or by selecting appropriate gear wheels.
