702,889. Testing efficiency of lubricants. ANGLAMOL, Ltd. Aug. 27, 1952, No. 21564/52. Class 106 (2) A lubricant testing apparatus comprises an engine 1, a gear box 2 coupled thereto, an axle housing 5 driven from the gear box, a pair of half shafts 7 driven from the axle housing each of which is coupled to a separate gear 8 and a dynamometer 9 coupled between the outputs of the separate gear boxes. Preferably the gears 8 are step-up ratios so that small torque-loads on the dynamometer arm give higher torque loads on the half shafts. For testing lubricants a new set of pinion gears and ring gears are used and the efficiency of the oil is assessed by inspection of the gears at the end of a test run carried out at a pre-determined speed; torque, and temperature. A new set of gears is used for each separate test.
