Abstract

An alternator for coupling to the end of an axle 1 of, for example, a railway carriage, comprises a central shaft 9 journalled in a sleeve 6 forming part of a casing 4, a rotor 12 with interdigitated poles 13, 16 being carried by the sleeve on bearings 11 and driven by the shaft through epicyclic gearing 33, 31, 32, 27. The rotor surrounds a stationary field winding 21 and is in turn surrounded by a stator core 18 carrying an output winding 20. Casing 4 has an external fixture with a resilient member 5 for attachment to the axle bush 3 and the shaft 9 is connected to the axle by a resilient coupling 8.
