Abstract
907,022. A.C. generators. PARSONS & CO. Ltd., C. A. Oct. 29, 1959 [Nov. 28, 1958], No. 38421/58. Class 35. In an A.C. generator unit comprising an A.C. generator at one end of which are an exciter 7, a slip ring assembly 8 for supplying excitation current from the exciter to the generator rotor winding not shown, and gearing 9, 10 for transmitting a drive from the rotor shaft 2 to the exciter, the axial length of the unit is reduced by arranging that the exciter has a separate shaft 11 driven by the gearing and displaced from the rotor shaft axis, the slip ring assembly 8 and gearing driving wheel 6 being coaxially mounted with respect to the axis of the shaft 2 and driven thereby, and the driving wheel 6 being located intermediate the rotor and the slip ring assembly. As shown, the driving wheel and slip ring assembly are carried by an extension shaft 5 mounted in bearings 13, 14 and coupled to the rotor shaft at 4. Electrical connections from the slip ring assembly to the rotor winding are via radial connectors 18, 19, a plug type disconnection 17, and leads 15. The exciter may be above, below, or at the same level as the rotor shaft, and the generator may be air or hydrogen cooled and driven by a turbine at the other end. The pedestal of rotor shaft bearing 3 forms a single unit 12 with the gearing casing.
