Abstract
571,443. Homopolar machines. GEOPHYSICAL PROSPECTING CO., Ltd., and FEKETE, A. F. Feb. 15, 1943, No. 2495. [Class 35] A homopolar machine, which may be used as a generator, or as a motor for driving a gyroscope, comprises a stationary shaft 12 having a central core portion 10 surrounded by an exciting winding 16 and formed on either side with cylindrical poles 19, 20 disposed within the cylindrical pole-faces 22, 23 of a surrounding rotary armature 21 carried by bearings 13, 14 on the shaft 12. Conductors 24 are arranged in or on the pole-faces and are connected to slip-rings 25, 26 rubbing on contact brushes 27 which are connected to the external load or supply by wires passing through the shaft 12. The slip-rings and brushes may be in the form of an anti-friction bearing, comprising a series of balls or rollers 28, Fig. 2, arranged between the slip-ring 26 and a ring 29 secured to, and insulated from, the shaft 12. The balls or rollers may be carried in a cage which is prevented from rotating and, as shown in Fig. 3, the cage 31 may be under the axial pressure of a spring so that the balls 32 make good contact with the internally coned slip-ring 34 and the externally coned collecting ring 33. The ball or roller brushes and slip-rings may also provide the mechanical support for the armature, the bearings 13, 14 then being unnecessary.
