Abstract
754,140. Motor driving arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and VAUGHAN CRANE CO., Ltd. Jan. 26, 1955 [Feb. 8, 1954], No. 3654/54. Class 35. The torque of a constant speed motor is transmitted to an output shaft by a pair of variable speed eddy current couplings disposed adjacent the opposite ends of the motor in respective annular spaces between the stator end turns and the output shaft. The motor shown has two eddy current couplings located at the opposite ends of the rotor 5 and each coupling has a primary wound member 11 fixed to the output shaft 1 and a secondary cylindrical metal member 14 fixed to the rotor 5. The latter is mounted on ball-bearings 6 so as to rotate about the shaft 1 which, in turn, is mounted on ball-bearings 2. Each coupling member 11 has imbricated poles embracing a winding 12 fed through brushes 16 and slip rings 15. The speed of the shaft 1 is controlled by the degree of excitation of the winding 12. Alternatively, the primary member 11 may be mounted on the rotor 5 and the secondary member on the shaft 1.
