Abstract

1,246,444. Electric motors; motor driving arrangements. R. R. REEVES. 28 Nov., 1968 [30 Aug., 1967], No. 39695/67. Heading H2A. An electric stepping motor comprises a stator with three or more circumferentially displaced poles and a rotor moving eccentrically in relation to the axis of the stator. As shown in Figs. 1, 2, the stepping motor comprises four stator poles each having two spaced coils 6a. The rotor is an annulus of soft iron mounted eccentrically within the stator bore and arranged to transmit rotary motion to an output shaft 5 through two mutually perpendicular key-keyway sets 14, 15, Fig. 3 (not shown) or through a flexible bellows 22, Fig. 4 (not shown) or through eccentric cams 25, Fig. 5 (not shown) mounted within the rotor. Copper bars (28, Fig. 3) in slots in the rotor form a damping winding, the stator and rotor are provided with intermeshing teeth 20, 21, and inductive pick-offs 27 detect rotor position. The stator windings are energized through a ring counter 70, Fig. 7 (not shown). A permanent magnet, e.g. 18, associated with each stator pole holds the rotor against a given pole until the next pole is energized. The p.m. holding torque may be supplemented by energizing the corresponding pole windings. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) having an external rotor (32) adapted to roll round the stator, gearing between the stator and rotor takes the form of pins on the stator engaging holes in the rotor.
