968, 758. Measuring the torque at vehicle road wheels. W. G. WALKER & CO. (ENGINEERS) Ltd. Aug. 26, 1963 [Aug. 27, 1962], No 32807/62. Heading G1W. In a dynamometer for measuring the torque or power developed at the road wheels of a vehicle, the road wheels drive rollers 2, 3 (Fig. 2) which are coupled to a fan 9 via a torque reaction gear box and a belt 8. The fan is embraced by an axially adjustable cowl to vary the load applied to the system. The gear box which is movable with respect to a base structure 1 may comprise a system of sun and planetary gears having coaxial input and output shafts 5, 7, respectively. The turning moment of the gear box is resisted by a spring balance 12 connected to an arm 25 projecting from the gear box, radially with respect to the shafts thereby providing a measure of the output torque at the road wheels. A tachometer 24 may be provided to measure the fan speed, so that the power developed at the road wheels may be calculated. Specification 854,188 is referred to.
