Abstract
992, 333. Dynamometers. HEENAN & FROUDE Ltd. Nov. 21, 1961 [Nov. 29, 1960], No. 41039/60. Heading G1W. Apparatus for testing the tractive effort or the braking effort of a vehicle comprises rollers 1, 1a, 2, 2a which drivingly engage the vehicle wheels 3 and are connected by a step-up belt or chain drive to a power absorbing brake 14 or to a motor 26, the step-up drive comprising a swing- ing frame or frames 10 pivoted at one end on the roller shaft 8 and carrying at the other end the high speed shaft of the drive 9 so that a torque is applied to the swinging frame in operation, the frame or frames 10 bearing on load.cells 28, 29, 37 proportionally to the torque restrains on the frames due to the tractive or driving effort, to give an indication of the effort to be measured. The power absorbed by the brake 14 may be used to drive a cooling fan 6, and the rollers may be supported in a unitary resiliently mounted frame.
