Abstract

A brake dynamometer for road vehicle does not need any external power supply for its operation. It can be used by a garage without power supply and also by the road side. The brake dynamometer has a hinged frame (10) with two rollers (11, 12). The wheel to be tested is situated on the two rollers (11, 12). One (11) of the rollers (11, 12) has a gear wheel (14) driving a chain (15) fixed at each end (16, 17) to a base (18). A lock (22) is used to secure the moving frame (10). A spring (20) and a shock absorber (21) restrain movement of the frame (10). The wheel (R) is driven on the rollers (11, 12) and the vehicle brake is applied. The lock (22) is released and a couple is applied to the wheel (R) as the weight of the vehicle tends to move down the frame (10). If the braking couple of the vehicle is adequate, the frame (10) will not move down.
