Abstract

A device for tensioning flexible elements such as webbing securing loads on motor vehicles comprises a reel 15 rotatably mounted in a frame 11, a lever 23 mounted on the frame for oscillatory movement, a ratchet wheel 19 and 20 at each end of the reel in driving engagement with the reel, a drive pawl plate 25 carried by the lever and engageable with the ratchet wheels to advance them in response to oscillatory movement of the lever, and check means 32 to prevent reverse rotary motion of the reel. The drive pawl plate is supported by the lever in such disposition that on each advancing movement of the lever the force applied by the lever to the ratchet wheels is transmitted through the drive pawl plate perpendicularly to the thickness of the plate. <IMAGE>
