Abstract

854,188. Dynamometers. WALKER & CO. (ENGINEERS) Ltd., W. G. March 3, 1959 [Dec. 19, 1957], No. 39452/57. Class 106 (2). A dynamometer for testing the power and/or torque developed at the driven road-wheels of motor vehicles comprises a roller 11 journalled in a frame 16, means which may comprise a second roller 10, to retain the wheels in frictional contact with the roller 11 to which a rotary fan 24 is connected and means 31 for measuring the rotation of the fan. The roller 11 is connected by a flexible coupling 17 to a pulley 18 coupled by a pulley belt 19 to a pulley 20 which is mounted on a shaft 21. The fan 24, enclosed by a shield 25, is connected to the shaft 21 and is embraced by a cylindrical cowl 26 adjustable axially by a lead-screw 27 engaging a threaded hole in a bridge 43 and which is connected to a hand-wheel 29. The rotational speed of the fan 24 is measured by an instrument 31 which receives a voltage proportional to the rotation from a tachometer generator 30 coupled to the shaft 21. The torque developed and power dissipated by the fan at any rotational speed depends upon the axial extent of the fan uncovered by the cowl 26. Calibration curves for the fan brake may be provided for various overlaps of the cowl 26 at various speeds. From these curves the torque developed and power dissipated under any conditions may be deduced from the overlap of the cowl 26 and the speed of the shaft 21. A control panel 32 on which the instrument 31 is mounted, may be provided with an electrically driven pump 33 which circulates cooling water through pipes 34 to the radiator of the vehicle. In a modification a mechanical tachometer is coupled to the shaft 21 in place of the generator 30 and the instrument 31. A locking clutch may be provided to lock either of the rollers against rotation to enable the vehicle wheels to climb over the roller 10 which is adjustable to and from the roller 11 to accommodate wheels of different sizes. According to the Provisional Specification the fan may be equipped with torque and power indicating means, as described in Specification 741,146.
