634,303. Variable-speed gearing. JANECEK FACTORY OF ARMS, Ltd., ING; F. March 5, 1946, No. 6877. Convention date, April 18, 1944. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In a gear changing mechanism, and particularly a foot-operated mechanism as used on motor cycles in which successive strokes of a pedal bring in successive gears, a selector plate 12 for moving the gear elements 17 is actuated by ratchet pawls 5, 6 on a plate 4 secured to the operating lever which engage teeth 13 on the selector plate 12 which are formed by partially punching out portions of the plate and bending these portions. As shown the plate 4 is secured to an operating shaft 3 and the selector-plate 12 is pivoted on an axis at right angles thereto, the striker forks 15 being actuated by engagement with cam slots 16 in the plate. In other arrangements the selector plate is pivoted about the same axis as the ratchet pawl or operating plate 4. Suitable shrouds may be provided for limiting the angle of operation of the pawls.
