Abstract
717,404. Operating clutches. WESTMINSTER ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. July 10, 1951 [July 11, 1950], No. 17337/50. Class 80 (2) A clutch is engageable in any one of a number of positions by an operator and is disengaged by power actuated mechanism, at a predetermined point near the end of a machine cycle, only when said engaging mechanism is released and a trip associated therewith is released from a pawl on the disengaging mechanism which may then function. A pivoted arm on a spot-welding machine is operated through a spring and a rod 10, Fig. 1, by an eccentric 13 freely mounted on a shaft 14 and attached to a claw clutch member 15. A complementary clutch member 30 is keyed to the shaft 14, which is driven by an electric motor through a worm gear, and is movable into engagement with the member 15 by means of a pedal-operated lever 32 carrying a roller 31. A spring 52 is disposed between the operating pedal and the lever 32 which lever is incapable of disengaging the clutch. An adjustable abutment 42 on the rod 10 actuates a spring-biased lever 40 pivoted to a member 43 which engages a shoulder on the member 30 to disengage the clutch at the end of a machine cycle. The member 43 is rendered inoperative, to allow clutch engagement, by a projection 45 on the lever 32. The tops 21, 21A, Fig. 2, of the clutch teeth 20, 20A, are inclined to facilitate engagement.
