Class 80 (2) In a plate clutch 4, 5 for rivet or other presses, engagement by a spring-loaded nut 17 mounted on a screwed sleeve 15 keyed on the driven shaft 1 is effected by manually withdrawing a spring- pressed slide 27 from engagement with a lug 22 projecting from the nut 17, the slide 27 being inevitably returned into the path of the lug 22 so as to disengage the clutch and engage a disc brake 29, 31 at the end of one revolution. The lug 22 has a steel-faced rubber cushion. Another parallel and spring-pressed slide 35 carries a pivoted pawl 43 spring-urged towards a notch 44 in slide 27, both slides being movable in a fixed bracket 34 and having transverse recesses 40, 41 through which passes a bar 39 connected to an operating treadle, the bar 39 having an oblique surface 42 co-operating with a corresponding surface in recess 41, Normally, the slides 27, 35 occupy the rightward position shown in Fig. 3, with the slide 27 in contact with lug 22 to hold the nut stationary, with the clutch disengaged and the brake engaged. On depressing the treadle. bar 39 is pulled down. thereby moving slide 35 to the left and with it, due to the engagement of pawl 43 with notch 44, the slide 27, thus freeing nut 17 which, under the action of its spring 19, moves to the right to disengage the brake and engage the clutch. After a half revolution, a lug 23 projecting from the nut 17 engages the pawl 43 to disengage the latter from the recess 44, so that slide 27 is returned to the right by its spring 36 into the path of lug 22, whereby the clutch is disengaged and the brake engaged at the end of the revolution even if the treadle has not been released.
