UNITED STATE8 HERMAN OSSWALD, OF MIVERVILLE, NEW COMPANY, OIE' HUDSON, NEW YORK,
incitatif YORK, ASSIG-NOR 'IO THE 'V @t 0 PRESS A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
POWER PRESS.
Application led January 6, 1925. Serial No. 925.
Another object is to provide means for intermittently actuating the brake.
Another object is to provide means for releasing the brake, which means coacts with the clutch mechanism, so that the load or4 frictional contact of the brake may be removed from the shaft before the clutch mechanism engages the power applying means.
The type of power press to which my present invention is applied, is shown, described and claimed in Letters Patent No. 769,955, dated September 13th, 1904, in which means are disclosed for locking the operating shaft to the drive wheel by the laterally movable clutch dog, and in Letters Patent No. 880,239, dated February 25th, 1908, in which means are illustrated for preventing the locking of the operating shaft to the drive wheel for more than a single revolution of the operating shaft in the event the operator should keep the shaft controlling treadle depressed a longer time than is necessary.
The clutch mechanism including the latch and switch plate, with which my present invention coacts, is shown, described and claimediin my copending application, Serial No. 723,023, filed J une 24th, 1924. y
A practical embodiment of my invention is represented in the accompanying` drawings, in which- F ig. 1 represents a side elevation of a power press of well known construction,
` partly in section, showing the parts in the position they assume when the drive wheel and operating shaft are locked by the clutch dog, the switch plate withdrawn by thetreadle connection and the brake released from the shaft.
Fig. 2 represents on a larger scale a detail section of the mechanism adjacent the taken in the Fig. 2.
The pedestal of the press is denoted by 1, the frame by 2, in which frame the drive wheel 3 and the operating shaft 4 are mounted. l The shaft 4 is arranged to be clutched to the drive Wheel by the spring pressed clutch dog 5 whichis moved intol engagement with the drive wheel by its spring when the fdog is released by the outward movement of the switch plate 6, which switch plate is slidably mounted in its guide frame 7 and yieldingly held at the limit ofits inward movement by the usual springs 8 shown in the dottedoutline in Figs. 2 and 3, for holding the clutch dog released.
' The treadle 9, which is pivoted at 10 to the pedestal '1, is yieldingly held at the limit plane of the line IV-IV of of its raisedV position by thespring 11. This treadle is connected by a rod 12 to a rock` arm 13 pivoted at 14 to the frame 2. y
A latch 15 is pivoted at 16 to the rock arm 13, Vthe hooked-end of which latch is arranged to be engaged with and disengaged from an abutment 17 on the switchl plate 6. Thisy latch 15 is yieldingly pressed toward the abutment 1 pin 18.
A latch releasing lever is pivotally mounted on an eccentric bushing 19,l one arm 20 of which lever engages the operating shaft 4 within a circumferential groove 21 in said shaft, across which groove the spring pressed clutch dog` 5 extends. The other arm 22 of the latch releasing lever engages a cam surface 23 on the latch 15.
The eccentric bushing 19 is `rotatively mounted on the shank of a screw bolt 24, which screw bolt may be tightened to clamp the bushing in its rotatively adjusted position.V
It willbe understood that when the switch plate 6 is withdrawn from the latch 15, the clutch dog is moved by its spring to clutch the shaft to the drive wheel and at the same time it will form an abutment in the said groove 21, so that as the shaft rotates the portion of the clutch dog located vwithin the groove will come into engagement with the arm 20 of the latch operating lever and swing it outwardly, thereby moving the arm (not shown) by a spring actuated presser' ico copending application, Serial No. 723,028,-
hereinbefore referred to and a specific description of their operation will -therefore be unnecessary, the present invention being directed to the novel adjustable brake releasing device for removing the frictional `contact from the operating shaft at the time the switch plate is being withdrawn to release the clutch dog, which device is constructed, arranged and operated as follows:
The enlarged portion 25 of the shaft 4 is arranged to be embraced by elements 26, 27 whichY form the contact members of the brake. rlhe element 26 is secured to the guide frame 7 by means of bolts 26, and
serves as a cover for the switch plate 6, and the element 27 Vis hinged at 28 to the element 26. 4These elements 26, 27 are provided with lugs 29, 30 respectively, which lugs are arranged to receive a bolt 3l, the head 32 of which engages the lugBO of the movable element 27 y, while the threaded end of the shanlr extends through the lugs and hasA a nut '34 between which -and the lug 29 a spring 35 is disposed. The tension of the spring 35 between the lug 29 and nut 34 tends to no1'- mally hold the elements 26, 27 in contact with the enlarged portion 25 of the shaft 4,
thereby placing a frictional drag on the shaft. ln order to release this frictional `contact of the shaft 4, l provide an arm 36 pivoted at 37 and having a laterally projecting end 38, which extends into the path of the switch plate 6. rfhe upper end of the arm 36 is arranged to receive a bolt 39 which is adjustably secured therein and adapted to engage theV end of the bolt 3l. rlhus it will be seen that as the foot of the operator actuates the treadle to withdraw the switch plate 6 and permit the clutch dog to move toward the drive wheel 3, the switch platel will engage the laterally projecting end 38 of the lever 86 and move it so as to cause the bolt 89 to contact with the bolt 81 and compress the spring 35 between the lug 29 and nut 34. As the bolt 3l is moved in the lugs 29, 30 the movable element 27 is permitted to swing on its pivot 28 away from the enlarged portion 25 thereby permitting the shaft 4 to rotate freely. When it is .desired to stop the press, the switch plate 6, by reason ofits actuating spring, will, when the dog 5 is brought around into position, move inwardly and cause the dog to be slid out of its locking position with the drive wheel 3. Simultaneously with the movement of the switch plate 6 the lever 36 will be rocked and the bolt 39 returned to its normal position, thus relieving the additional tension on the spring 85 and permitting it to exert its pressure on the head of the bolt and lugs 29, 30 of the elements 26, 27, which are again brought into frictional conta-ct with the enlarged port-ion 25 of the shaft 4.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a very simple and effective device for intermittently releasing the brake on the shaft 4 thereby relieving the constant frictional drag on the shaft and increasing the eiciency and durability of the press.
lt is evident that various changes may beA resorted to in the construction, form and arrangement of the several parts without departing from the .spirit and scope of my invention; hence, l do not wish to be limited 'to the particular embodiment herein shown and described, except as `they may be included in the claims.
Vilhat I claim is l. In a power press, the combination with the drive wheel, the operating shaft and the clutch mechanism, of a brake normally engaging the shaft, and means operated by the initial movement of the clutch-mechanism for releasing said brake in advance of the clutch, whereby the action of the brake on the shaft is removed before the clutch mechanism coacts with the shaft.

5. In a power press, the combination with the drive wheel, the operating shaft and the clutch mechanism, ofa brake normally engaging the shaft, said brake comprising a fixedk element, a movablel element and a spring actuated device engaging said elements, and means comprising an arm operated by the movement of the clutch mechanism arranged to engage said device for releasing the brake.
6. In a power press, the combination with the drive Wheel, the operating shaft and the clutch mechanism, of a brake normally engaging the shaft, said brake comprisin a l0 fixed element, a movable element am? a spring actuated device engaging said elements, and means comprising an arm, said arm having an adjustable contact member arranged to engage said device for releasing the brake.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my invention, I have signed my name this 16th day of December, 1924.
