Abstract

472,331. Operating clutches. HORDERN, MASON, & EDWARDS, Ltd., EDWARDS, W. G., DEYKIN, R. F., and WILSON, G. S. March 28, 1936, No. 9239. [Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch for a power press or other machine, an axially-movable clutch key 5 in the driven shaft 7 is urged towards engagement by a spring 40, and is adapted to be retracted by the engagement with a projection 21 thereon of the wedge end 15 of a lever 12. An arm 27 extends through a slot in the lever 12 and has a notch 32 co-operating with a pin 30 fixed in the slot, the lower end of the arm 27 being pivoted on a block 28 slidable on a part 25 of a lever 22 connected by a link 24 to an operating pedal. The block can be secured by a screw 38 in either of the two positions shown in full and dotted lines respectively in Fig. 2. The lever 12 is urged towards the key by an adjustable spring 16, and the notch 32 is normally maintained in engagement with the pin 30 by a spring 33. With the block 28 secured in the position shown in full lines, the lever 12 is pulled downwards on depression of the pedal, allowing the clutch to engage. During the ensuing revolution of the shaft 7, the projection 21 engages the free end of the arm 27 to tilt the latter, causing the notch 32 to disengage from the pin 30. The lever 12 thus moves upwards and the clutch is disengaged at the end of the revolution, even if the pedal is not released. On release of the pedal, the notch again engages the pin. By securing the block 28 in the position shown in dotted lines, the free end of the arm 27 is moved out of the orbit of the projection 21, so that the clutch remains engaged so long as the pedal is depressed.
