360,963. Operating clutches. ANDERSON, BOYES, & CO., Ltd. and ANDERSON, A., Flemington Electrical Works, Motherwell, Lanarkshire. Aug. 14, 1930, No. 24325. [Class 80 (ii).] In a coal &c. cutting machine with ratchet mechanism for driving the haulage drum or sprocket, a multiple-plate friction clutch, serving as an overload clutch, is interposed between the ratchet mechanism and the drum &c. and is applied through one or more springs 7, Fig. 3, adjusted by a screw 8 and acting through a bell-crank lever 11, while a screw 15, with a handle 16, acts through the bell-crank lever to free the clutch. In a modification, Fig. 6, the clutch is applied by a pivoted lever 11a engaged by a nut 9a pressed by a spring 7a in a slidable housing 7c, a cam 16a operated by a handle 17 controlling the position of the housing so as to apply or release the clutch.
