Operating or controlling clutches for coalcutting and like machines of the type including a haulage drum or sprocket driven from a motor through variable-speed transmission gearing and having a slip device to prevent damage due to overload. The slip device comprises a cone clutch 4 between a motor driven spur-wheel 5 and a shaft 2 leading to the variable-speed gear. ing, the clutch being operated by a fork 6 pivoted at 7 and provided with an integral link 10, while a separate link 11, also pivoted at 7, is adapted to bear against lugs 12 on the link 10. Springs 13, 14 are adapted to act on the links 10, 11 through eye-bolts 21, 22 respectively. The eye-bolts have extensions 30, 31 opposed to a rotatable cam 27, the cam being so connected to the control mechanism of the variable speed gear that with a low gear ratio between the motor and haulage drum &c. both springs 13, 14 act on the clutch, while with a high gear ratio, the link 11 is depressed and only spring 13 acts on the clutch. In a further position of the cam, both links 10, 11 are depressed. The device may be modified to provide more than two stages of spring pressure according to the nature of the variable speed transmission. Specification 301,595 is referred to.
