Abstract

1,039,805. Reverse gear and control thereof; belt gearing. F. P. WHALEY. March 8, 1965 [April 23, 1964], No. 16936/64. Headings F2D and F2Q. A transmission comprises an input shaft 1 to which pulley part 2a and clutch part 3a are connected by bolts and a sleeve 1a, and a unit 4 which is slidable on but not rotatable relative to sleeve 1a; a belt 15 on a freely rotatable ring 23 engages a pulley splined on an output shaft which also has splined to it a disc 18 extending to between part 3a and unit 4. A grooved finger 5 is fixed to the sleeve 4a of unit 4 and extends through slots in sleeve 1a where it is acted on by a spring 7 and a plunger 6. Two weights 10 spring-biased toward sleeve 1a are each pivoted by two C-shaped levers 12 to sleeve 1a. A control rod 8 has a cam 9 engaging plunger 6 with forward, neutral, or reverse portions 9a, 9b, 9c. In operation, forward drive is obtained by moving plunger 6 inwards to bring unit 4 adjacent belt 15, as shaft 1 speeds up the weights 10 move out until the ends 13 of levers 12 engage behind finger 5 to move unit 4 to fully engage the belt to transmit forward drive. For reverse, spring 7 moves unit 4 to adjacent disc 18 and again when shaft 1 speeds up the ends 13 of levers 12 engage finger 5 to move unit 4 to grip disc 18 between unit 4 and clutch part 3a to transmit reverse drive. With unit 4 in the shown neutral position, then should shaft 1 be rotating above a certain speed the ends 13 of levers 12 engage the grooves in finger 5 to prevent the unit 4 being moved to transmit forward or reverse drive; similarly, the levers 12 prevent any movement of unit 4 when transmitting drive with input shaft 1 rotating above this certain speed. Finger 5 may be replaced by two parallel pins or by slots or recesses in sleeve 4a. The control rod 8 carries a pin working in a gate, Fig. 1 (not shown).
