Abstract

Controlling variable-speed gearing,-Variablespeed gearing for a machine tool is controlled by a shaft C, Fig. 1, which is turned to effect some speed changes, and is slid longitudinally to effect the remainder. A cam sleeve C<8> confined between lugs d fixed to the machine frame is splined on the shaft C. Sliding the shaft C thus operates a lever C<3> only, to effect some changes. Turning the shaft operates another lever C<7> only, effecting other changes. These two motions may be transmitted from a doubly-pivoted hand lever A through a sliding and turning shaft a<4>, which has a sector and pinion connection a<5>, c with the shaft C. The shaft a<4> carries a window B movable over a figured drum b, which indicates the speed combination in use. The shaft C may be interlocked with the main driving clutch or other power control. In Figs. 2 and 3 is shown such a connection with a crank E controlling a two-speed motor. Zones of flats e', e<8>, e<9> are formed on the shaft C adapted to be engaged by a double crank e<4>. In the configuration shown, the motor is stopped, and the shaft C is free to turn and to slide. When a hand-lever e<3>, is moved to one of its end position, the motor is moving at one or other speed, and the crank lever e<4> engages one of the flats on the shaft C preventing it from turning or sliding.
