Abstract

971,797. Hydrostatic transmissions. DOWTY TECHNICAL DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Sept. 16, 1963 [June 22, 1962], No. 24096/62. Headings F2C and F2D. [Also in Division F1] A hydrostatic power transmission 16 is combined with an engine 2 to form a unit having an overall length not substantially greater than that of the engine itself, the power output shaft 29 being connectible to the engine by a double-acting clutch 36 either mechanically through shaft 23 or through the hydrostatic transmission 16. The crank-shaft 3 drives shaft 23 and pump shaft 19 of the transmission 16 through gears 22, 21 and the motor shaft 26 of the transmission 16 is geared to a pinion 3 freely rotating on the output shaft 29, the clutch sleeve 36 being splined to shaft 29 and movable to the left to clutch shaft 23 directly to shaft 29 or to the right to clutch pinion 33 to shaft 29 to transmit the drive through transmission 16. The sleeve 36 and transmission control member 40 are actuated by a single lever 41, Fig. 2, moving in a gate 50. In the midposition of slot 50, lever 41 sets the lever 40 to neutral position, movement to the right selecting reverse drive while movement to the left to the end of the straight portion of slot 50 sets lever 40 to the maximum forward transmission ratio, at which the speeds of shaft 23 and gear 33 are equal. Lever 41 can then be moved along the bar of slot 50 to rotate shaft 44 which actuates the lever 37 to move sleeve 36 into engagement with shaft 23 for direct drive, a spring bias on lever 41 then automatically moving it to the end of the short portion of slot 50 to set lever 40 to neutral so that no power is transmitted through transmission 16. On return to drive through transmission 16, lever 41 must first be moved to the maximum forward transmission ratio to bring pinion 33 up to the same speed as shaft 23 before it can be moved sideways to shaft clutch 36. Specification 962,361 is referred to.
